Education without application is just entertainment.
—Tim Sanders
It’s so amazing when you read something and it fascinates you—the writing, the masterpiece written by someone else. Read Mark Manson’s books or articles; I assure you it will never bore you. He writes so well that you’ll always be hooked reading him. Dan Koe, you won’t be able to resist Dan’s writing. You can read him for hours. James Clear will ensure that you won’t sleep reading him, and he succeeds in it as always. And many more are there whom you won’t be able to resist their sheets.
What is this shit? You ask
This is epic sh*t. I say
These people entertain you because they apply their takeaways, which they get entertained from. Every day, they learn something exciting and create their own, which excites us.
Reading a book won’t change your life
You are changing someone else’s life by reading his stuff, which fascinates you. It entertains you; think of it as a reality show where the main agenda of the show's maker is to get lots of audiences, increase the TRP of the show, and make money out of it. The same goes with books; the author puts his effort into researching and writing them, adding flavours to make them attractive, and selling them to the readers, making lots of money. They are putting values in their stuff, but are you getting that value and applying it in real life?
Many times you don’t because you read just for entertainment.
You enjoy reading but forget to enjoy it by applying it in your favour.
If you have read James Clear’s Atomic Habits, you’ll find it one of the most practical books till now. It gives you effective templates and resources to help you change your life and habits. Here also, if you are willing to take those resources in your favour and apply them in real life, then only you will start changing your life.
I am not saying books are bullshit; I am saying books are epic shit.
Books are epic crap.
Interesting right? Yes.
The more a book interests you, the less you kick your ass and let yourself enjoy that book in real life because it sucks.
It sucks hard.
Even I suck at sticking to the things I’ve learned from books earlier. The truth is, I enjoy reading. I love it. It comforts me. And as it comforts me, I feel like that book is my world. I enjoy being there always. You can call it a labyrinth of books.
Do you know what the problem is with books and your reading?
Books are not a problem because they're useful for everyone. The problem is your reading and how you apply it in your life.
How to apply the lessons from what you read
I don’t know what you’ll gain from today's digest, but you can take some lessons on how to apply the takeaway after reading or learning a book.
Here’s what I and the most successful people do:
Reading/learning a book
Read the introduction of that book or article, and if it doesn’t fascinate you enough to read more, put it down. Believe that it is not the time to read that thing, and if you force yourself to read further, you are wasting your time because I know you will not apply the lessons in life. No frameworks or guides will work until and unless you read something that excites you. Reading is simple, but sticking to reading sucks. You need to pick something that will hold your attention for long. In short, read what you love. Bullshit! Read about what problem you’re facing the most. You’ll automatically find it worth reading.
Applying what you read
Stop entertaining yourself now. It’s time to kick your ass and stand up to do things that’ll actually solve your problems. If you’re finding it difficult to kick, let me help you with it. No, not with kicking, but with this:
ASS Framework:
Apply: You know why applying what you read takes time. It’s because you want it to go straight; you read and want that thing to happen in your life. But the thing is, you can’t straight away change everything. Your old values and beliefs will come again and again. You need to start small.
Start small: Starting small is the key. You will be amazed when you look back and see that it was not that big; it was the little things, like waking up early when you don’t feel like it and doing the things that matter the most. Binging something worthwhile that inspires you, showing up for your well-being, and more.
Small actions compound. Start small.Solve and stick: Many times you’ll fail. You need to solve and stick to what you have to do. When you get up and set your alarm for 6 AM, you snooze it many times, but there will be one time you won’t. You need to stick to that one time forever. It’s not that you will not screw up again. You need to have that spirit and belief: you can do it again after screwing up.
Sharing/teaching what you applied
Sharing is caring; if you don’t care, don’t share. Earlier, I used to be so selfish when sharing or teaching others came into my head. I find it foolish. I tried to keep my learning a secret and failed. I failed in life because I did not share or teach things to others. Did you get it? I was a school topper, and toppers don’t share or teach to others. But when I found this technique, something extraordinary happened:
Feynman Technique: The Feynman technique means teaching what you learn to a 5-year-old.
The science behind this technique is that when you teach a topic to a 5-year-old who is unfamiliar with the topic, it helps you find the gap in your learning. It will help you find out where you suck and what you are missing.
Share or teach online, create and share content on social media, and follow the feedback. Feedback will let you know what you are missing. There are many other ways you can share what you applied. Find them out and choose your way.
With this, I must say that sharing or teaching is bigger than just applying what you learn. Here are some ultimate benefits of sharing or teaching what you learn and apply:
Understand Better: Explaining what you learn helps you understand it more deeply.
Remember More: Talking about what you’ve learned helps you remember it longer.
Boost Confidence: Sharing knowledge makes you feel more confident and sure of yourself.
Build Relationships: Sharing what you know brings you closer to others and helps build strong connections.
Add Value: By sharing, you help others learn too, making you more valuable to those around you.
Final thoughts
Reading, applying, and sharing all in one help you transform your life. Hit the Google search button and type books on ‘the problem you’re facing.’ Pick a book and start reading, then apply what you read and then share it with the world.
Let’s start with changing ourselves. So our problems will free us.
Reading a book won't change your life, but applying what you read can drastically change one's life.
