Energy
or in other words; the capacity or power to do things.
Energy is a fundamental need to accomplish, and it is often necessary to achieve more. But there are things, or, you can say, areas of your life, that are stealing the energy from you.
Energy allows us to think, move, work and enjoy life.
Today’s digest is all about ‘energy', 3 things that sap energy’ and ‘how we can save it more.’
Let's start
I am getting it, you are looking for the categories as always. So without wasting any more time, let’s unleash the different types of energy in us.
Consider that there are 5 types of human energy; physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social. let’s dive into them in detail:
Physical Energy: This is the energy that powers our bodies to perform physical activities, like walking, running, lifting, and other movements. It's fueled by the food we eat and the oxygen we breathe.
Mental Energy: This is the energy that helps us think, learn, focus, and solve problems. It's needed for cognitive tasks and is influenced by factors like sleep, nutrition, and mental exercises.
Emotional Energy: This type of energy is related to our feelings and emotions. It affects how we handle stress, interact with others, and maintain our overall well-being. Positive emotions can boost our energy, while negative emotions can drain it.
Spiritual Energy: This energy comes from our sense of purpose, meaning, and connection to something greater than ourselves. It can be nurtured through practices like meditation, prayer, or spending time in nature.
Social Energy: This is the energy we get from interacting with others. Positive social interactions can energize us, while negative interactions can deplete our energy.
"The way you think, the way you behave, the way you eat, can influence your life by 30 to 50 years. Your energy levels are a reflection of how you take care of yourself and interact with the world."
I think I am distracting you from the main agenda of this post. So for the comeback, let’s shout, ‘The main agenda of this post is 3 things that sap our energy.’
The 3 things or areas that sap your energy are:
Sleep deprivation
Screen devices
People
Let’s dig into the 3 areas deeply:
How sleep is sapping your energy
Actually, not sleeping enough is sucking up your energy. A night of good sleep is the fundamental source of high energy for the human body. But instead of getting the recommended amount of sleep, you're depriving yourself of it. And you complain, "I always feel like my hands and legs are not working." Oh, please don't start giving excuses, I know it happens to you.
The new generation sucks at sleeping. You eat, drink, and jump to bed with your smartphone in hand, scrolling beyond midnight and waking up after noon with energy in minus.
You go to bed everyday but end up sleeping tomorrow.
Impact
Lack of sleep leads to exhaustion and decreased stamina. (Physical energy)
It impairs memory function and decision-making. (Mental Energy)
Poor sleep can lead to mood swings, irritability, and increased stress. (Emotional energy)
Lack of rest can diminish your sense of purpose, making it harder to find meaning in daily activities. (Spiritual energy)
Sleep deprivation can lead to reduced interactions and impaired communication. (Social energy)
Try this:
Go to bed early
It’s a bit of bad advice, but think about it when you simply go to bed early, you’ll end up sleeping early and ultimately, you wake up early and energetically.
Eat 1 hour before
When you’ve just eaten your dinner, your body temperature goes up, and it takes time to let you sleep. Your body should be calm and cool.
Take a shower
Research has shown that those who take a night shower have gain an improvement in their sleep. It’s because a shower manages the body temperature to be normal.
Ultimately, enough sleep can also lead to a lack of energy. because when you wake up and sleep again, you end up sleeping again and again, where you use your energy in sleeping only. Use a sleep calculator to adjust how much sleep you need according to your sleep cycle and age.
Going to sleep and waking up at the same time is a cornerstone of healthy sleep hygiene.
“Whatever the problem, sleep is a part of the solution."
How your smartphone (devices) suck up your energy
We are all on our phones, we don’t control them, they control us. Smartphones are made for that only—to steal our attention. The most distracting thing is the thing you are using right now. More on ‘distractions’ here.
Instead of using your phone at its limit, you scroll through things continuously and let it suck up your energy and give you pain in the eyes.
So you don’t sleep properly either.
Not only your smartphone but your TV—Netflix shows that you enjoy and feel good but don’t realize that it also sucks up your energy. And yes your laptop as well, if you don’t use it properly, and many more.
Impact
Excessive screen time can lead to eye strain, and headaches causing physical discomfort and exhaustion. (Physical energy)
Constant multitasking can overload your brain, reducing productivity and increasing mental exhaustion. (Mental Energy)
Social media and online interactions can lead to feelings of anxiety, or frustration.(Emotional energy)
Excessive screen time can disconnect you from real-world experiences and relationships, impacting your sense of purpose and meaning. (Spiritual energy)
Excessive use of screens can limit in-person social interactions, leading to feelings of loneliness. (Social energy)
Try this:
Digital Detox
Do not use any screen device at least 1 hour before sleeping and 1 hour after waking up, respectively. Those blue light emissions impact your sleep pattern and hence you can’t sleep properly. As a result, you end up losing your fresh energy.
Schedule for the worst
Schedule a specific time for when you’ll use social media, or when you’ll check emails. Schedule with the method of timeboxing; open your calendar and add things like social media time, email checking, and all for a particular hour.
20 20 20 Rule
This 20 20 20 rule simply states that every 20 minutes, take a break of 20 seconds, and look at something 20 feet away. A very not but effective approach to deal with screens. Try it out, you’ll feel good in those 20 seconds.
Simon Sinek put it the best,
"The more we connect, the less we are truly connected. Technology can be a distraction, but it can also be a great tool for enhancing our social energy when used mindfully."
How people around you sap your energy
Your energy spikes when you’re around people, around the right people. Instead of spending time with people where energy flows, you spend time with people who only suck energy from you. Ultimately, you end up isolating yourself with loneliness. And to get out of that loneliness, you take a step back, you put your hands in your pocket, you take out your phone, and start scrolling through feeds with virtual people enjoying themselves over there.
Congratulations you just fall under the trap of doomscrolling again.
Researches have found that this generation sucks at making new friends nowadays because the distance between interactions with people and talking on the phone has increased.
People find it easy to speak on their phones instead of interacting with people in real. Having real conversations with the right people can spread an immense amount of positive energy around and among. On the other hand, having conversations with the wrong people around can suck up your energy and can spread negative energy around and among you.
Impact
Negative interactions can lead to stress, which can create tension or exhaustion. (Physical energy)
Dealing with the wrong people can consume mental energy, reducing your ability to focus and think clearly. (Mental energy)
Toxic relationships can sap your emotional control, leading to feelings of frustration, sadness, or anger. (Emotional energy)
Negative people can sap your sense of purpose and joy, making it harder to stay connected to your values and goals. (Spiritual energy)
Interactions with the right can give you energy and interactions with the wrong ones can be opposite. (Social energy)
Try this:
Set boundaries
Start saying no to people or things that you think will sap or suck your energy.
Identify energy drainers
If you find yourself hanging out with people who are always negative and degrade you always, cut them out of your life, no other way, they are the real energy suckers.
Communicate effectively
Practice clear and open communication filled with empathy for others, spend time and energy with those who are supportive positively negative to you or negatively positive to you. Communicating effectively with the right people can strengthen relationship that will give a spike to your energy.
"Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher. Energy is contagious, positive and negative alike."
Sometimes it’s not social anxiety. Sometimes the people around you just suck.
—Mark Manson
Final words
Where focus goes, energy flows. Your life is controlled by what you focus on, and if you focus on positive and empowering thoughts, you will find the energy to achieve your goals. The way you think, behave, and eat, can influence your life by years. Your energy level is a reflection of how you take care of yourself and your energy.
Save your energy to save your life in every aspect.
