Good people pay a far higher price for being good...
Being good is hard, but it is the best thing
Good men are, always and everywhere, in short supply.
—Naval Ravikant
I was reading a newsletter from my imitation mentor, Ankur Warikoo, in which he talked about his experience with her boss, like how and what his boss said to him that stayed with him forever.
Here’s what his boss said to him:
“Good people pay a far higher price for being good than bad people pay for being bad.”
This is going to stay with me forever too.
Good people pay a far higher price for being good than bad people pay for being bad
Have you ever experienced doing many things people have told you to do?—At work or home; from your boss or colleagues, family or friends?
If you're thinking of saying yes, I do. Then I would like to welcome you in today’s digest: It’s about you (a good person).
And I know you’re also thinking of—why me?
Why me?
Before answering the question—why me? I want to share one of my experiences with you. It’s going to be fun; read and feel it.
I was the guy who did the work given to me anyway, on time, and I did it well. People started giving me the work again and again. Like my aunt, Miss Radhs always used to tell me to go to my uncle’s shop and stay there so my uncle could have lunch at home. I handled the shop’s customers well, and that’s why my aunt always told me to go and stay there. Another thing is I read well, but my family doesn't, so I have to read and translate all the letters and post notes to them. Another thing is whenever someone in the family announces someone has to go to the market and bring this and that, my name always comes forward. No, seriously. In the family there are other people like me; one can tell them to go to the market, but still, it seems I am the only one.
Sumit, you need to go to the market…
Sumit, go to the shop… your uncle is waiting,,,
Sumit this, Sumit that… and all.
I always wondered—why me?
The thing is, I agreed and did all the work asked me to do, but the other members of the family didn’t.
This is why good people pay a far higher price for being good than bad people pay for being bad.
Why me? Because I do my work so well that I get more to do. You do your work so well that more has been provided to you.
And bad people do less meaningful work, so they won’t be told to do this and that. The world doesn’t give work to the bad ones because they suck at it and do not find them worthy of doing it.
So, you and I come forward and accept all the work to do because people know we can do it.
If you find yourself doing many things, it is because people know you can only do them. Realise that people ask you to do them because they believe YOU can do them.
“Be good with your work and get a lot of work. Or suck at your work and get less meaningful work. What do you want to choose?”
—Ankur Warikoo
The choice is yours between the two.
Happy Sunday :)
